Four officers on scene during fatal shooting

- By Greg Bischof

TEXARKANA, Ark. — Apparently Don Crowson, the 37-year-old man fatally shot by a Texarkana Arkansas Police officer, did live at the apartment building where he was shot shortly before 10 p.m. Saturday.

Arkansas-side Police Public Information Officer Cpl. Kelly Pillgreen confirmed Monday that Crowson did rent a room at the apartment in 100 block of Hickory Street.

Police were dispatched to the apartment about 9:44 p.m. in response to a possible disturbance call.

The caller told the dispatcher an individual had been pacing in the street, yelling that he was going to kill someone and (he) was jumping up and down on a fence, Pillgreen said in a news dispatch. The caller also indicated the man appeared to be under the influence of drugs.

However, Pilgreen said as of Monday the police department had no prior call-ins regarding Crowson.

Besides confirming that

Crowson was living in the apartment near where he was said to be causing the disturbance, Pillgreen also said Monday that there were about four officers at the scene when Crowson charged at them with an object, yelling that he was going to kill them. This action was followed by one of the officers on the scene firing his service weapon and apparently striking the suspect.

Officers rendered aid until a LifeNet ambulance arrived on the scene.

Crowson was pronounced dead at the scene. None of the officers were injured.

The officer involved in the shooting has since been placed on administrative leave pending the ASP’s investigation and ruling from the Eighth South Prosecuting Attorney.

The officers’ encounter with Crowson was recorded by body cameras in use at the time of the incident. The Arkansas-side Police Department will release a copy of the video when approved by counsel.

Arkansas State Police are still investigating circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.

Crowson’s body is presently at the Arkansas State Crime Lab.
