DeKalb stuns highly ranked Pilot Point in final seconds
DeKALB, Texas — DeKalb quarterback Kaleb Dooley connected with Conrad Crouch for a 28-yard touchdown pass as time expired, lifting the Bears to a comefrom-behind 29-28 victory over state-ranked Pilot Point Friday night at Bear Stadium.
With the dramatic game-winning play, DeKalb stays unbeaten with a 3-0 record while the Bearcats, ranked No. 6 in Class 3A,
Division I, slip to 1-2.
Dooley had a hand in all five Bear scores. He had four rushing touchdowns covering 16, 3, 6 and 3 yards. He finished with 73 yards on 14 carries.
Dooley completed only 2-of-6 attempts passing for 36 yards, but none was bigger than the throw on the game’s final play. The TD reception was Crouch’s lone catch on the night.
DeKalb trailed 22-14 entering the fourth quarter before the Bears reeled off 21 points while holding Pilot Point to a single score.
Dooley sparked the offensive assault with his third and fourth TDs on runs of 6 and 3 yards. Ross Tapley’s 8-yard scoring run tied the score at 22-all and Crouch’s extra-point kick gave DeKalb a short-lived 23-22 advantage, its first lead of the game.
The Bearcats regained the lead late in the final quarter on quarterback Wyatt
Smith’s 3-yard keeper. DeKalb stopped Pilot Point’s PAT, leaving the visitors up 28-23 with time running out.
Dooley then guided the Bears on the game-winning drive that culminated with the touchdown pass to Crouch.
Tyler Hawkins paced the DeKalb defense with five tackles, including a sack, and teammate Mason Trejor also had five stops. Winky Williams had an interception for the Bears.
