No. 9 Iowa tops No. 10 ISU to keep Cy-Hawk Trophy
AMES, Iowa — Jack Campbell returned a fumble 6 yards for a touchdown and No. 10 Iowa ran its winning streak against No. 9 Iowa State to six games with a 27-17 victory Saturday that ruined the most-anticipated home game in Cyclones history.
In the first Cy-Hawk Trophy game matching ranked teams in 65 total meetings, the Hawkeyes (2-0) were not about to play the foil for Iowa State’s feel-good story.
Iowa turned four takeaways into 20 points, ran its overall winning streak to eight games and its winning streak against ranked teams to five. Iowa has not won that many in a row against ranked opponents since 1960.
TCU 34, California 32
FORT WORTH, Texas — Quentin Johnston caught two of Max Duggan’s three touchdown passes, with the go-ahead score coming on a nifty catch-andrun as TCU edged California to remain undefeated against Pac-12 teams under coach Gary Patterson.
Johnston put the Horned Frogs (2-0) ahead to stay with the 45-yard TD catch with 9:53 left, when he twisted around one defender who fell down near the 30 and then shed the attempted tackle by another inside the 10. Johnston finished with five catches for 95 yards.
Zach Evans ran for 183 yards on 22 carries, with a 51-yard TD just before halftime for the Horned Frogs. Duggan completed 17 of 31 passes for 234 yards and added 71 yards rushing on 19 carries with a 9-yard keeper for a TD with 5:47 left for a 34-26 lead.
Chase Garbers threw for 309 yards and two touchdowns for Cal (0-2). He had 235 yards passing in the first half, with 199 of that coming on only four plays (49, 54, 28 and 68 yards).
Oklahoma St. 28, Tulsa 23
STILLWATER, Okla. — Jaylen Warren shed three tackles to punch in an 11-yard touchdown run that gave Oklahoma State enough insurance to beat Tulsa.
The Cowboys trailed 14-7 entering the fourth quarter, but took control of the nonconference game with a Spencer Sanders touchdown throw, LD Brown’s 98-yard kickoff return for a score and Warren’s late run.
Oklahoma State’s defense helped it avoid a rare loss to its Turnpike Classic rival, limiting the Golden Hurricane offense to four third-down conversions on 13 attempts and 17 points.
Tulsa, which fell to FCS program UC Davis last week, looked poised to beat Oklahoma State for the first time since 1998 and win its first game in Stillwater since 1951.
West Virginia 66, Long Island 0
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Jarret Doege threw three touchdown passes, Winston Wright returned a kickoff for another score and West Virginia trounced Long Island.
The Mountaineers (1-1) bounced back from a dull effort last week at Maryland with 542 yards of offense against a Championship Subdivision team with back-to-back games looming against ranked opponents.
Leddie Brown and backup quarterback Garrett Greene each ran for two scores for West Virginia, which got TDs on seven of its first eight possessions.
It marked the most points scored by the Mountaineers since they beat Baylor 70-63 in 2012.
West Virginia coach Neal Brown complained a few weeks ago about how college teams don’t have the luxury that NFL and high school teams do in the preseason by scrimmaging other teams.
Saturday might have been the next closest thing.
“One thing I was proud of our team of, we played quality football,” Brown said. “It wasn’t sloppy.”
Doege threw scoring tosses of 39 yards to Sean Ryan and 18 and 15 yards to Sam James. James’ second TD catch came after Sean Martin recovered a fumble at the Long Island 21.
