LAST WEEK: The Hawks faced Class 4A, Division I team Paris and lost, 31-14, at Hawk Stadium.

THIS WEEK: Pleasant Grove (1-2) will be the visiting team when it takes on Silsbee (1-2) at Nacogdoches High School at 7 p.m.

OFFENSIVE STANDOUTS: Jaylen Boardley caught four passes for 44 yards and rushed for 97 yards on 13 carries with a touchdown. Quarterback Jarret Halter, a freshman, threw for 76 yards on 7-of-14 passing with a TD and two interceptions. Lance Jackson caught a 5-yard touchdown from Halter.

DEFENSIVE STANDOUTS: Reese Elrod led the Hawks with 18 tackles, 11 of which were solo. Victor Shaw had 10 tackles, BJ Rayfield made nine tackles and Makyron Whitaker had eight tackles. Jonah Bates recorded six tackles, including two for a loss. Elrod caused a fumble and Whitaker recover the fumble.

COACH JOSH GIBSON COMMENTS: “We got better as the game went along. If we played a softer schedule, we’d be feeling better right now, but this will make us stronger in the long run. Our kids continue to step up against stiff competition.

“I saw some really good effort by some guys. Victor Shaw, who played both sides of the ball, pursued sideline to sideline. It is hard for the bigger guys to run 30, 40 yards to the sideline on every play. Makyron Whitaker was going sideline to sideline too; that was his best game. Jonah Bates played lights out on the defensive line. I think we have some good growth going there.”
