DeKalb rips Redwater to set up Pewitt clash

REDWATER, Texas — DeKalb used an explosive offense and a stingy defense to post a 40-6 victory over Redwater in District 10-3A football action Friday night at Dragon Stadium.

The Bears (5-2, 2-1) erupted for a season-high 497 yards of total offense while limiting Redwater (3-4, 0-3) to just 117.

DeKalb amassed 433 yards rushing, with two runners eclipsing the 100yard mark, and nearly a third. Winky Williams led the charge with 170 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries (13.1-yard average). Amar Love added 110 yards on 14 totes and Chris Betts had 90 yards only 7 trips, and he scored two touchdowns.

Bear quarterback Kaleb Dooley, who ran for a touchdown, completed only one pass, but it went for 64 yards to Zaden White.

DeKalb led 14-0 at halftime and outscored the Dragons 26-6 in the second half. Redwater’s lone score came in the fourth quarter on Serlie Creer’s 8-yard pass from Brody Johnson. The 2-point conversion failed, leaving the final score 40-6.

The Bears’ defense held Redwater to 27 yards rushing and 90 yards passing. Leading the effort were Ross Tapley with 14 tackles, Payton Yandle had 13 stops, Mason Trejo (12), and Zavier Hawkins and Love (11 each). DeKalb also forced two turnovers, a fumble and an interception.

The win sets DeKalb up for a crucial district game at home Friday against nemesis Paul Pewitt (3-3, 2-0).

“This is my fourth year back at DeKalb after I was here in the ’90s, but Pewitt and DeKalb have always played close, tough games,” said Bears head coach Buddy Griffin. “Even when they weren’t in our district the way they are now, we’d play them every year in non-district or the playoffs. It seemed like every game went down to the wire, but Pewitt would always pull it out.

“I don’t believe DeKalb has beaten Pewitt since 2012, so we feel like this is our time (to win),” Griffin said. “We’d like to turn things in our favor, but we know they’re going to be tough to beat. It ought to be a good game Friday.”

James Bowie 52, Clarksville 20

CLARKSVILLE, Texas — James Bowie had three runners top the century-mark against the Blue Tigers as the Pirates raced to a 52-20 District 9-2A victory.

Dylan Braley led James Bowie (3-2, 1-0) with 188 yards on 25 carries, Lukas Dodson added 130 yards on 11 trips, and Brandon Obenosky 120 yards only 11 carries.

Braley and Obenosky scored three touchdowns apiece. Braley’s scores came on runs of 5, 2 and 10 yards while Obenosky hit paydirt with runs of 12, 15 and 3 yards.

Logan McCullough also scored on a 4-yard run and added a pair 2-point conversion runs. The Pirates totaled 469 yards of total offense, wiht 454 coming on the ground.

Pewitt 61, Chisum 30

NAPLES-OMAHA, Texas — Paul Pewitt’s Hayden Green rushed for 101 yards and two touchdowns and passed for 109 yards and another score to spark the Brahmas to a 61-30 triumph over Paris Chisum in District 10-3A action.

Green carries the ball only nine times (11.2-yard average), and he was 3 of 3 passing.

Running back Deiontray Hill added 121 yards rushing and three more TDs. Teammate A’myree Johnson had 133 yards in kickoff and punt returns. He also had five tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery.

Pewitt (3-3, 2-0) plays at DeKalb in 10-3A play Friday.

Golf

New Haven winners

TEXARKANA, Ark. — Joey Baumannn had a low gross 76 to win the club championship Friday at New Haven Golf Club.

Eric Beard had a low net of 66 to place first.

Karl Kemp was second low gross with a 77 and Rodney Rogers had 67 for second low net.

Charles McGee carded an 80 for third low gross and Bob Keener had a 71 low net.
