- By Andrew Bell Texarkana Gazette

TEXARKANA, Texas — Saturday is Election Day for the Pleasant Grove Independent School District’s $39.9 million proposed bond issue, with five voting sites available from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

During a special meeting in February, the district’s Board of Trustees unanimously called the bond election to address facility needs.

There is no plan for a tax rate increase from the district’s current rate of $1.3615, due to rising property values and taxpayer money saved from recent bond refunds. Director of Finance Derick Sibley said the district saved approximately $4.3 million in taxpayer money from refunding bonds in 2014 and 2020.

The recommendation to call the election came from a committee made up of administration members, board members, staff members and community members. The committee met six times from November through February and recommended the following improvements to campuses within PGISD:

• New high school cafeteria

• Remodel of the current high school cafeteria into a College and Career Counseling Center

• Additions to the high school performing arts center, including a scene shop and storage, and sound booth relocation

• New high school field house, including classroom space, boys’ and girls’ locker rooms, and sports medicine facilities

• New high school baseball/softball/track complex

• Renovations in the high school library, restrooms, hallways and common areas

• Significant renovations to Pleasant Grove Middle School, including improved functionalities, roofing, HVAC, interior and exterior updates
