Cobb and Adcock vying for JUCO championship
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — A pair of Texarkana baseball natives will be aiming to help Crowder College claim the National Junior College Athletic Association World Series championship starting this weekend.
Arkansas High graduate Cody Adcock, a starting pitcher, and Pleasant Grove alum Jackson Cobb, shortstop, have helped the Roughriders (53-11) get back to the JUCO World Series, where the team finished third a year ago.
“Last year we were the 1 seed and finished third, so our focus wasn’t just getting back but getting back here and winning the whole thing,” Cobb said about the World Series. “It means a lot to have the opportunity because we put in a lot of work in the fall.”
No. 5 seed Crowder faces sixth-seeded Central Arizona at noon Sunday. The tournament runs Sunday, May 28 through Sunday, June 4.
Cobb is batting .336 during his red-shirt freshman year. He has three home runs, 47 RBI, 45 runs scored and 12 stolen bases.
“This tournament is the best of the best, and the motivation has been to show that we’re a part of that,” Cobb said. “We all want to win this more than anything.”
Adcock, who transferred in from Mississippi for his sophomore season, has started 13 games for the Roughriders and is 4-2 on the year. He has 64 innings of work, a 5.77 ERA and 77 strikeouts.
“Coming in as a sophomore, being one of the older guys on the team, I just wanted to be one of the guys who could help the team win,” Adcock said. “I’ve tried to push the guys to be the best they can and be a leader by example.
“I feel like I could’ve done better during the regular season, but I’m going to put that behind me. This is a new level, and we’re here to win the World Series.”
