TUESDAY SYLVESTER “SLY” HAYWOOD, JR.

Sylvester “Sly” Haywood, Jr. passed away Friday August 5, 2022 in Plano, TX at a local hospital.

Mr. Haywood was born on September 3, 1965 to Sylvester and Ella B. Haywood in Ashdown, AR. He was a resident of Ardmore, OK where he worked as an automobile mechanic. He was a member of Corinth Baptist Church in Ardmore, OK. Mr. Haywood also enjoyed being a part of the Southern Riders of Ardmore.

He is preceded in death by his father Sylvester Haywood, Sr.

He is survived by his mother Ella B. Haywood of Foreman, AR. Five sons, Mark Johnson of Ardmore, OK, Tyler Haywood of Ardmore, OK, Dayton Lewis of Northlake, TX, Sa-ron Johnson of Lawton, OK and Ishiah Nugent of Ardmore, OK. Two daughters, Aspen and Tamia Nugent of Ardmore, OK. One brother, Mark Haywood of Hope, AR. Four sisters, Lisa Haywood of New Boston, TX, Margaret Haywood, Penny Haywood, Edna Haywood all of Foreman, AR and half-sister Trish Wells of Grand Prairie, TX. Numerous grandchild­ren, relatives and friends.

Services are under the direction of Madden Funeral Home. Visitation will be Friday August 12, 2022 at Madden Funeral Home Chapel in Foreman, AR from 6:00pm-8:00pm. Funeral will be Saturday August 13, 2022 at Oscar Hamilton Elementary School Gymnasium at 11:00am followed by the burial at Red Oak Grove Cemetery in Ashdown, AR.

FRANK TURK JR.

Frank Turk, Jr., 86, of Texarkana, Arkansas, made his way to heaven on August 7, 2022. He was born December 12, 1935, in Village, Arkansas to Frank and Julia Dendy Turk. After graduating with a BS in Geology from Southern State University, he entered the US Navy officers candidate school. Upon completion of his training, he was commission­ed a naval officer. He was stationed on board the USS George Clymer in the Pacific and served as the Communicat­ions Officer.

Upon completion of active duty, Frank became a special agent for the Naval Investigat­ive Service and later for the United States Department of Defense and retired after 25 years of service. He remained in the Naval reserve and retired with the rank of Commander.

Frank was a successful businessma­n buying and selling real estate and timber and working in the oil and gas industry. He also raised cattle on his farm south of Texarkana. He served on the Arkansas Geologic Commission, Arkansas Criminal Defense Review Committee, Texarkana Airport Board, Miller County Water Board, Miller County Equalizati­on Board, and he was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Texarkana, Arkansas.

He was a ping pong champion in the Navy. He loved to ballroom dance with his wife, Ann, and play hearts with his friends at the Elks Lodge. He was a generous provider to his family and had a mischievou­s sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him.

His loving wife of 50 years, Ann O’neal Turk, died in 2009. He is survived by his two daughters, Teresa Turk, of Fayettevil­le, AR, Tamara Turk, of Georgetown, TX, his beloved grandson, William Turk Lachowsky, of Georgetown, TX., his brother, Dr. Leslie Turk, his nieces, Dr. Kelly Hood (James) of Lafayette, CA and Meredith Robinett of Longview, TX, favorite nephew, Les Turk (Shara) of Little Rock, AR and many cousins. We would like to thank the staff at The Retreat at Kenwood, for the kind and patient care they provided and his hospice nurse, Mike Severa.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at 10:00 am, Thursday, August 11, 2022, at Village Methodist Cemetery with Dr. Eric Goble officiatin­g under the direction of Lewis Funeral Home, Inc., in Magnolia. Friends and family are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Texarkana, AR Elks Lodge 399 or the American Cancer Society.

CLEOPHUS COULTER

Cleophus Edward Coulter was born February 7, 1932, in Tollette, Arkansas to the late Odie and Minnie (Chaney) Coulter. He departed this earthly life at the age of 90 on August 4, 2022.

Private Coulter served in the US Army during the Korean war as a Gunner and Battery Cannoneer, from 1952 to1954. He received an Honorable Discharge.

Deacon Coulter leaves to cherish his memory, his Wife Betty Jean Coulter of 63 years, 3 daughters and 2 sons: Wanda Jean Anderson, Jacquelyn Louise Anderson, Anthony Lewis (Sabine) Coulter, Wayne Edward (Bree) Coulter, and Julie Ann Coulter who preceded him in death, 11 Grandchild­ren and 6 Great-grandchild­ren. As well as a host of many relatives and friends.

WEDNESDAY REYNALDO (REY) ACEVEDO

Reynaldo (Rey) Acevedo, age 75, of Atlanta, Texas, passed from this life Sunday, August 7, 2022. He was born November 18, 1946, in Hebbronvil­le, Texas, to Jose and Tresa Acevedo. Rey was a member of the Ironworker­s Union # 623; and the Church of Jesus Christ the Latter Day Saints. He enjoyed restoring old cars and his favorite was his 62 Chevy Impala that he drove when he and Hazel began dating. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Joe, Roel, Rene’, Rudolfo (Fito), Juanita, Roberto and Sylvia; and by his parents.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Hazel Acevedo of Atlanta, Texas; his children, Marcus Acevedo of Atlanta, Texas, Lance Acevedo and wife Crystal of Atlanta, Texas, Leandra Wommack and husband Marshall of Pfluggervi­lle, Texas, Kurtis Acevedo and wife Wendy of Bloomburg, Texas; ten grandchild­ren and one on the way; and a number of other relatives and a host of friends.

Graveside services will be 10:00 am, Friday, August 12, 2022 at Antioch Cemetery under the direction of Hanner Funeral Service with Kurtis Acevedo officiatin­g.

Visitation will be Friday, August 12, 2022 from 8:30 am to 9:30 am at Hanner Funeral Service.

GLENDA ROGERS

Glenda Jean Thompson Rogers, age 74 of Port Alto, Texas, passed away on August 7, 2022. Glenda was born on August 27, 1947, in Texarkana, Texas, to the late Edward and Gladys Thompson, longtime former residents of Naples, Texas, and owner of Thompson’s Furniture Store in Naples. A resident of Austin, Texas, after graduating from The University of Texas at Austin with a marketing degree, Glenda worked as a marketing executive. After retirement, she and her late husband, James H. Rogers Jr., built their retirement home on a bay in Port Alto, TX. James Rogers preceded Glenda in death three years ago.

Glenda loved to travel, and she loved to cook. Her home was the place for many family Thanksgivi­ng celebratio­ns as well as other gatherings of family and friends. Being a gourmet cook, Glenda filled all holidays with special moments. Her bay pier also provided the perfect location for her children, the grandchild­ren, her nephew, and friends to fish while also viewing beautiful sunrises and sunsets.

Glenda served as an example of grace, beauty, caring, and love. She loved her friends in Naples, in Austin, and at the bay and demonstrat­ed that love by all the many things that she did for others. She took great care in making the bay house a special place of love, warmth, and joy. Glenda loved her children and their spouses, her grandchild­ren, her nephew and family, and all other relatives. She will be missed greatly by all who knew her and always remain in our hearts.

Glenda was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Survivors include her son James H. Rogers III and wife Ilene of Corona del Mar, California and their children Connor and Collin; son Clint Rogers and wife Emily of Austin, Texas and their children Elizabeth and Hunter; daughter Charlotte Pulitzer and husband Robert of Houston, Texas; sister Betty Thompson Alford of Claremont, California; and nephew Brent Harrison and wife Greta of Corona del Mar, California and their children, Heidi and Charles.

The family will receive friends and relatives from 5:007:00 p.m. on Friday, August 12th at Harrison Funeral Home in Naples, Texas with funeral services on Saturday, August 13th at 10:00 a.m. at Harrison Funeral Home in Naples, with Reverend Michael Harris officiatin­g.
