Texas High falls on Day 1 of Hoopfest

- ANDREW BELL

TEXARKANA, Texas — The first day of the second annual Red River Hoopfest at Texas High School’s Tiger Center featured action from four games, including teams from Arkansas, Tennessee and Texas.

The Little Rock Parkview Patriots took out the Plano (Texas) Wildcats, the Bentonville West (Arkansas) Wolverines defeated the Texas High Tigers and the Bartlett (Tenn.) Lady Panthers extinguished the Crandall (Texas) Lady Pirates.

The Duncanville, Texas, and Bartlett Panthers’ game ended too late for presstime.

Despite a scrappy defensive start, Texas High couldn’t handle the offensive firepower of Bentonville West, which ran away with the game in the second half.

The Tigers trailed only 27-26 in the first half, but got outscored 3812 in the second half as Tucker Anderson, Bentonville’s 6-foot-8 senior center, took over the game. Anderson dropped 29 points, grabbed seven rebounds and blocked two shots.

Sophomore guard Alex Orr led the Tigers in scoring with 10 points, and junior forward TJ Gray poured in eight. Senior forward Jaylen Godwin snatched up a team-high six boards.

Texas High will face off against the Airline (Bossier City, La.) Vikings at 8 Saturday night, and Bentonville West will play O.D. Wyatt at 2 p.m.

PARKVIEW 58, PLANO 56

Parkview narrowly edged out Plano in an overtime showdown due to a couple of clutch free throws down the stretch.

The Patriots were able to fend off the Wildcats late despite a monstrous 31-point performance from Oklahoma State commit Justin McBride.

For Parkview, junior forward Dallas Thomas led the way with 22 points and seven rebounds and hit

the game-clinching free throws in overtime to seal the victory.

Parkview will face off with the Lake Highlands (Texas) Wildcats in Day 2 of Hoopfest at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
