PG has two on all-state team; THS has one

Pleasant Grove landed a couple of players on the Class 4A all-state football team and Texas High had one in the 5A ranks it was announced today.

The teams are called the Blue Bell/Texas Sports Writers Associatio­n all-state squads selected by writers who cover high school athletics in the Lone Star State.

The Hawks had a thirdteam selection in offensive lineman Victor Shaw, a 6-foot-4, 245-pound senior. Pleasant Grove’s other pick receiving honorable mention was lineman Lance Jackson, a 6-foot-6, 250-pound sophomore.

The Hawks played four rounds into the state playoffs and lost the regional final to eventual champion Carthage.

Texas High’s all-stater was second-team offensive guard Briley Barron. Barron is a 6-foot-5, 305-pound senior.

Carthage senior quarterbac­k Connor Cuff and Cuero senior linebacker Sean Burks are the players of the year on the 4A all-state football team.

Cuff passed for 4,033 yards with 52 touchdowns and only four intercepti­ons in leading Carthage to a 16-0 record and Division II state title. Burks had 257 tackles, 36 of them for losses. He had 16 quarterbac­k pressures for the 13-2 Gobblers who lost to Wimberley in the Division II semifinals.

Carthage’s Scott Surratt was the coach of the year. His state title was his ninth

for the Bulldogs, tying Gordon Wood’s record.

Dallas South Oak Cliff senior defensive lineman Billy Walton, who helped the Bears to the Class 5A, Division II state championsh­ip, is the defensive player of the year on the all-state football team.

Walton, who signed with Texas, had 105 tackles, including 34 for losses that included 20 sacks for the 13-3 Bears.

Sharing offensive player of the year honors are Midlothian senior quarterbac­k Kaden Brown and Montgomery Lake Creek sophomore running back Tyvonn Byars. Brown, who signed with South Dakota State, passed for 3,291 yards with 40 touchdowns and four intercepti­ons and rushed for 639 yards.

Byars rushed for 2,346 yards with 37 touchdowns in leading the 12-1 Lions to their first 5A district title.

SOC’s Clifton Todd was the coach of the year, winning his second straight state title.
