Hawks belt 25 hits in 15-3 win over Carthage

CARTHAGE, Texas — Pleasant Grove’s softball team opened the season with a bang, ripping 25 hits in a 5-inning 15-3 victory over Carthage.

The Lady Hawks scored run in all five innings against the Lady Bulldogs.

“I was very pleased with our season opener,” said Hawks coach Rebecca Collom. “We have some old faces in different spots and some new faces in general.

“We squared up a lot of balls. Anytime we are passing the bat like that, we’re going to have good outcomes. Sarah (Hackleman) settled in on the mound and finished up nicely.

“Defense got the opportunit­y to make some plays and got us out of some jams. Overall can’t complain, we came back and answered the runs that we gave up and didn’t relax to give up anymore.”

Adi Koller led the Hawks with a 5-for-5 performanc­e, with 5 RBI and 4 runs scored. M Williams added 4 hits and 3 RBI and scored 3 runs, P Humphrey had 4 hits and 5 RBI, and A Runion had three hits and an RBI.

Pleasant Grove’s other leading hitters were: J Smith with 3 hits and 3 runs scored, H Allen and Hackleman with 2 hits each. Hackleman, the winning pitcherm also scored 3 runs.

Carthage managed 5 hits off Hackleman, who struck out 3 and walked 1 in going the distance.

EAGLES RESCHEDULE

FORT WORTH, Texas — Texas A&M University-Texarkana’s scheduled softball doublehead­er against Arlington Baptist University has been pushed back to today because of wet grounds.

The Eagles (4-0) are set to play two games against the host Lady Patriots, with the first pitch set for a 3 p.m. start today on the Clark Stadium Softball Complex.

PARIS BLANKS HAWKS, 4-0

The Pleasant Grove soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision to Paris.

“Our varsity played a talented Paris team and lost,” said Hawks coach Christa Robinson. “This was a great learning experience for the team and we are ready to take what we learned from this game into the rest of the season.”

Pleasant Grove’s JV also lost, 5-2, to the Wildcats.

The Hawk’ goals were scored by Brandon Olalde on a penalty kick, and Krish Thapa on a Elias Flores assist.

Basketball MCLEOD DOWNS HARLETON

McLEOD, Texas — McLeod used a balanced scoring attack to defeat Harleton, 54-19, in District 21-2A action Tuesday night.

The Longhorns (24-9, 9-3) were led by Grayson Owens with 13 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, Brennan Penny added 12 points, including a pair of treys, and Kannon Dempsey had 11.

McLeod led 5-4 at the first break before outscoring Harleton 14-6 in the second quarter and 19-2 in the third period.

The Longhorns also won the junior varsity game, 33-8, with Tristen Kennedy scoring 13 points for the winners.
