- RICK THOMAS

FOUKE, Ark. — Fouke rolled past Glen Rose, 44-33, for the District 7-3A basketball tournament championship Saturday night.

The Lady Panthers (29-3 overall) won the regular-season Conference 7-3A title with a 14-0 record.

Fouke will be a No. 1 seed in the regional tournament and will play No. 4 seed Dewitt at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Drew Central High School’s gymnasium in Monticello, Arkansas.

Against Glen Rose, the Panthers were led in scoring by Nailah Zetrenne with 13 points and Connie Rose added 11 points. Ashley Stafford scored 15 points for Glen Rose, which also advances to the regional tournament.

“I thought our girls defended as well as they had all year,” said Fouke coach Mo Williams. “Glen Rose’s girls are tough and they don’t give you anything easy.

“I’m so proud that these girls got this championship tonight on their home court in front of the entire community.”

The Panthers built an 11-3 lead at the end of the first quarter and took a 32-24 advantage into the fourth quarter.

TEXARKANA, Texas — Texas A&M University-texarkana Eagles swept a pair of baseball games from University of the Southwest Saturday at Spring Lake Park.

LADY HAWKS SPLIT PAIR

CARTHAGE, Texas — Pleasant Grove split a pair of games Saturday in the Carthage Softball Tournament.

The Lady Hawks fell to West Rusk, 4-2 and then came back to defeat Harmony, 5-1, in their second game. Pleasant Grove went 3-1 in the Carthage Tournament.

“We split today, but had good opportunities to make adjustments,” said Pleasant Grove coach Becca Collom. “In the first game, we adjusted a little late to a little faster pitcher. We finally did, but with a time limit game, we ran out of time. We’re proud we didn’t quit and we made adjustments to chip into their lead.”

Collom said in the second game, the Hawks had to readjust to a slower pitcher.

“It’s always good to be put in those situations that can prepare us down the line,” the coach said. “We adjusted quicker and had some timely hits to clear runners. Kasidy Ingram stepped up with runners on and had a timely double to score 2 runners. Presley (Humphrey) hit a 2-run shot with time running out to add to our lead.”

The Hawks had only three hits in the 4-inning first game. Makenzie Williams had a hit, as did Humphrey and Abby Runion. Sarah Hackleman took the pitching loss, giving up 5 hits, 4 runs (3 earned), striking out 6 and walking 4.

In the second game, the Pleasant Grove had 6 hits in the 4-inning contest. Humphrey had two hits, including the homer, to drive in 3 runs. Hailey Allen was 2-for-2 and Ingram had a double and drove in 2 runs.

Winning pitcher Runion gave up 5 hits, 1 run (earned), and walked 3.

“Overall it was a good tournament for us,” Collom said. “We are making adjustments with every game under our belt. Sarah and Abby both got innings in and getting more confident every game. Always glad to see early grit and fight.”
