TAMU-T Eagles complete 3-game baseball sweep of Southwest

TEXARKANA, Texas — Texas A&M University-Texarkana’s baseball team stayed unbeaten in Red River Athletic Conference play with a 14-1 victory over University of the Southwest Sunday.

The Eagles climb to 5-6 overall and 3-0 in RRAC action while Southwest of Hobbs, New Mexico, falls to 0-3.

TAMU-T won all three games against Southwest, including Saturday’s doublehead­er, 12-6, and 4-2 in 10 innings.

The Eagles, coached by Steve Jones (8th season), erupted for 5 runs in the second inning and tacked on 6 more in the fifth to record Sunday’s win.

The Texarkana hosts banged out 13 hits (Southwest had 6). Luke Hyzdu was 3-for4 with a double, 3 RBI and scored 3 run; Eric Spencer was 2-for-2 with 2 walks and 3 RBI; Jonathan Rios and Kyle McMullen added 2 hits each and scored 2 runs.

Other Eagles hitters were: Julian Macias and Dakota Leopold with a double and 2 RBI apiece. Xavier Selway had a hit, an RBI and scored twice.

Collin Fenilli was the winning pitcher, going 6 1/3 innings and allowing 6 hits, 1 run (earned). He struck out 5 and walked 3. He was touched by Southwest’s Andru Sanchez, who hit a solo home run in the fourth inning.

The Eagles rallied late to pull out the win in Saturday’s second game of the 3-game series. The hosts scored a run in the bottom of the ninth to send the game into extra innings tied at 2-all. TAMU-T then scored the decisive two runs in the bottom of the 1oth to escape with a win.

The Eagles had 10 hits, led by Dylan Simmons with three hits, including a home run, and 2 RBI, Leopold had two hits, and Hunter Reid had a solo homer and scored 2 runs. Pudge Carlisle and Spencer had a double each.

Reliever Nathan Hunter pitched three innings of no hits and no runs to notch the pitching win.

In Saturday’s first game, TAMU-T slapped 10 hits. Lyzdu had 3 hits to knock in 4 runs, Reid and Brandon Riley had two hits each, and McMullen had a hit and 2 RBI. Riley also had 2 RBI.

The Eagles will be back at home at 2 p.m. Tuesday, hosting Central Baptist College.

Track and Field Atlanta 4th, Tigers 5th in Maverick Relays

MARSHALL, Texas — Atlanta placed fourth and Texas High tied for fifth place in the annual Marshall Maverick Relays Saturday at Maverick Stadium.

It is the season-opening track and field events for area schools.

Palestine won the boys division with 108.50 points, followed by Longview (104) and Marshall (90.50). Queen City placed eighth with 8 points.

Atlanta won the girls division with 93 points, Texas High was fourth with 76 and Queen City 10th with 16.
