Border Battle: Texas High posts 2 impressive victories

Tigers defeat Fort Smith Northside and Camden Fairview

TEXARKANA, Texas — Texas High flexed its muscles in its annual Border Battle baseball tournament.

The Tigers registered a pair of victories, 9-5 over Fort Smith Northside, and 12-1 in 5 innings over Camden Fairview.

Liberty-eylau also posted a 9-3 victory over Northside on Saturday.

The Tigers (5-2) were closing out the three-day tournament that was forced by heavy rains to move to Longview’s turf field for second-day action. The event returned Saturday to Tiger Field.

Texas High outhit the Grizzlies, 11-6. Jacob Yowell led the Tigers’ assault with three hits, including a double, to knock in two runs.

Dalton Raley added two hits, including a three-run home run, and Ean Crite smacked a two-run homer for the Tigers. Branden Allred and Knox Pilgreen also had hits.

Raley’s four-bagger, a blast over the right-field wall, gave the Tigers an 8-5 lead in the fifth inning. Northside had led 3-2 in the fourth frame before Texas High started its comeback.

Allen Cartwright went the distance to pick up the pitching win. He allowed five runs on six hits. He struck out seven and walked three.

Against Camden Fairview, Texas High scored a dozen runs in the first four innings to win the contest by the 10-run mercy rule.

Crite belted a 2-run homer to spark the Tigers, who only had four hits in the 5-inning game. Kameron Wrightner, Lane Smith and Raley added singles.

Camden Gamble was the winning pitcher, giving up one run on five hits in 3 2/3 innings.

The Tigers will be back in action Tuesday, playing at Benton, La. Texas High also will compete in the Bistineau Classic on Thursday through Saturday.

The Tigers opens District 15-5A play March 14 at home against Hallsville.
