Understanding the challenges of Alzheimer’s Disease

- BY ANGELA GLASS

June is the month dedicated to raising awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and promoting brain health. As we navigate the challenges and triumphs of life, it is crucial to prioritize the well-being of our most vital organ, the brain.

Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month serves as a reminder to educate ourselves and others about the impact of Alzheimer’s disease, a neurodegenerative condition that affects millions worldwide. Let us take this opportunity to spread knowledge, compassion, and support for those living with Alzheimer’s, their families and caregivers.

While the month of June has been chosen to shine a spotlight on Alzheimer’s disease, you are also encouraged to focus on maintaining a healthy brain. Engaging in activities that stimulate cognitive function, adopting a nutritious diet, regular exercise, quality sleep, and staying socially connected are all essential for brain health.

Together, we can make a difference by sharing information, supporting research, and championing policies that address the challenges faced by those affected by Alzheimer’s disease.

If you would like to support the Alzheimer’s Association in their efforts in the fight to end this disease please look for upcoming events in your area such as annual walks and events that raise funding for research and awareness in the community. You can participate by wearing these colors all month long in recognition of the ongoing support for anyone that has experienced the challenges associated with Alzheimer’s and dementia.

■ Blue represents someone living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia

■ Purple is for those who have lost a someone to the disease.

■ Yellow represents someone who is currently supporting or caring for a person living with Alzheimer’s.

■ Orange is for those who support the cause and the Association’s vision of a world without Alzheimer’s and all other dementia.
