TAMU-T sweeps doublehead­er from Texas College

TEXARKANA, Texas — The Texas A&M University-texarkana Eagles volleyball team had a relatively easy match against Texas College Saturday afternoon by sweeping a doublehead­er in their final home contest.

The scores in the first match were 25-18, 25-5, and 255, and the second were scores of 25-9, 25-6, and a close one, 25-23.

The Eagles improve their overall record to 23-8, and 133 in Red River Athletic Conference play. TAMU closes out regular-season play next week against Philander Smith.

With a 13-3 Conference record, the Eagles are in third place behind Javier and Our Lady of the Lakes. Conference playoffs begin Nov. 10.

Texas College (Tyler) came with only six players, four freshmen and two seniors, and are 0-12 on the season.

In between games, the five TAMU senior players were honored. They were Faith Herrera, Zuleica Cruz, Claudia Etling, Jordan Dewberry, and the only area player on the 18-player roster was Colleen Kilgore of Atlanta.

In the first match, Cruz led with 12 assists, Ja’kerra Holt had seven kills and Sasha Bajek five, and Kilgore had six service points.

In the second match the Eagles claimed an early lead, 13-8, and later with Cruz serving six points, stretched their lead to 19-8, and continued to pull away, 25-9.

With an early 3-2 lead and with Dewberry serving, the Eagles ran off 13 straight points, and won easily, 25-6.

Despite its big disadvanta­ge, the Lady Steers kept final set close all the way with many ties.

TAMU led near the end, 20-16, but Texas College fought back and drew even again at, 23-23, before the Eagles scored the final two points.

Mia Mata and Holt had six kills each and Cruz six service points and 12 assists.
