Hooks’ Black MVP on All-district 14-3A team

Hooks went 11-1 in winning the District 14-3A girls basketball championsh­ip, but the Lady Hornets shared the superlativ­e awards on this year’s all-district team.

The team is selected by the girls head basketball coaches in the district.

Hooks did capture the highest honor as Anna Beth Black was named the district’s most valuable player.

Black, a junior, helped the Lady Hornets to a 29-6 record and into the regional quarterfin­als where they lost to No. 4 ranked Winnsboro.

Black eclipsed the 1,000th point that she has scored in three years of varsity play.

The district’s offensive MVP award went to Queen City senior Lauren Carroll. Atlanta senior Ma’kaylin King garnered the defensive MVP.

The Lady Rabbs’ Kym Sheppard and New Boston’s Abrianna Scott, both seniors, were selected as co-outstandin­g rebounder.

Queen City senior Mallori Stringer won the 6th-man award, Dekalb’s Ashtyn Carr was newcomer of the year, and the Lady Bears’ Michael Hill was coach of the year.

Hooks headed up the first team with three selections.

Lady Hornet Kinsley Birdwell was joined on the elite squad by a pair of freshmen, Rayya Ganaway-brown and DD Johnson.

Queen City, which defeated Atlanta in a seeding playoff after the two schools tied for second place, had three players on the first team.

The trio, all seniors, includes Jamecia Cook, Serenity Oden and Trinity Oden.

The Lady Bulldogs advanced to the regional quarterfin­als before losing 66-63 to a 30-1 Tatum team.

Atlanta ‘s two first-team picks were senior Ja’daeya Larry and junior Carlajah Adger.

New Boston’s Karli Strain and Dekalb’s Addison Starrett complete the first team.

New Boston had three selections on the second team: juniors Addie Davis and Makayla Bell and freshman Ashlyn Pepper.

Atlanta placed two on the second unit: senior Alex Larry and junior Chantoya Hurd.

Dekalb also had two second-teamers in senior Lizeth Martinez and sophomore Kailyn Betts.

Rounding out the second team are Redwater senior Landy Canto, Queen City junior Brooklynn Garner and Paul Pewitt senior Destiny Henderson. Honorable mentions went to (listed by schools):

Atlanta: Aysia Heard (jr.), Jaliyah Boyd (sr.) and Elliana Edwards (jr.)

Dekalb: Lashanna Hope (soph.), Ashtyn Daniels (sr.), and Zaria Daniels (fr.).

Hooks: Maddie Campbell (sr.).

New Boston: Solai Dorsey (jr.), Jayla Rowden (soph.), and Katlin Vaughn (jr.).

Paul Pewitt: Gillian Lin (jr.), Ashtyn Boyd (sr.), Mckensi Jackson (fr.), Myles Morris (fr.) and Gloria Pureco (fr.).
