TSO to visit ‘Dark Side of the Moon’
“You can imagine a band like Pink Floyd, when you hear their songs, you can often imagine that they had a huge color palette in mind ...” Philip Mann
TEXARKANA, Texas — The Texarkana Symphony Orchestra will give a nod to the coming total eclipse with a special concert the weekend before it occurs.
The Texarkana Symphony Orchestra and guest band Jeans ‘n Classics will perform Pink Floyd’s classic album “The Dark Side of the Moon” in its entirety two days before the eclipse will be visible locally. Songs from “The Wall,” another Pink Floyd album, are also on the program.
Jeans ‘n Classics specializes in such shows, bringing a symphonic rock catalogue — arranged for rock band, vocalists and orchestra — to symphonies across North America. On its website, the group bills itself as “most definitely not a tribute act.”
“You can imagine a band like Pink Floyd, when you hear their songs, you can often imagine that they had a huge color palette in mind. And they use every instrument available to them. And you imagine if they had a whole symphony orchestra available to them, they would have used it,” said Philip Mann, TSO music director and conductor.
“The Dark Side of the Moon” was released in 1973. About 45 million copies have been sold, and the album has set records for longevity on the Billboard 200 charts.
“As time goes by, Pink Floyd simply gets better and better. Our audiences adore the music, we love to perform it, and there is no question it has found a very sweet spot with the orchestras,” Jeans ‘n Classic’s website states.
The concert is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday, April 6, at the Perot Theatre, 221 Main St. Tickets are available at perottheatre.org, texarkanasymphony.org and the Perot box office.
