Turnovers kill Truman in loss

- By Steve Sherman

BucksLocalSports Editor Turnovers kill you — every time.

Just ask Harry Truman head coach Ed Cubbage.

After battling rpper Dublin to a stalemate in the first quarter, the host Tigers turned the ball over three times, leading to 21 unanswered points by the Flying Cardinals.

The first gaffe by Truman was an interception at the 7:45 mark of the second quarter. rpper Dublin QB John Derr made the Tigers pay for the mistake when he connected with Reed Rapine for a 15-yard scoring strike.

A turnover later, Derr hit Khalid Weems over the middle for a 42-yard touchdown pass and Rapine picked up the next Truman fumble, rumbling 21 yards for the score and a 21-0 Cardinals lead.

Before the end of the half, Derr would connect on his third TD of the game, hitting receiver Brad Shildkrout with a 17-yard scoring strike as time expired.

After the break, the Tiger defense put the clamps down but by then it was too little, too late.

For Truman, junior RB Jordan Livingston rushed 113 yards on 18 carries. Junior fullback Manny Fisher took the ball 45 yards on 12 carries and scored once in the final frame. Juniors dianni Adamo (3-23), Bobby Hill (4-25) and Jake Zolna (3-9) also contributed to the Tigers’ rushing attack.

Truman posted more yards (243-218) on offense and one more first down than rpper Dublin.

If not for those turnovers, the Tigers might have found themselves in a dogfight.
