See the city through the eyes of four artists in ‘Philadelphia Seen’
The Hicks Art Center Gallery at Bucks County Community College presents “Philadelphia Seen” from Jan. 23 through March 13 on the college’s Newtown campus. “Philadelphia Seen” presents four artists — Justin Audet, Gina Giles, Karen Kirchoff, and Jeffrey Stockbridge — whose photographic work together form four varied portraits of the city. The exhibition aims to give a sense of the diversity and scope of emerging contemporary photographic work being made in Philadelphia.
Audet, who has built a massive repository of images taken walking through Philadelphia, combines his pho-
tographs into multipart compositions, full of unexpected juxtapositions. Giles has made an extended series of brutally honest yet empathetic portraits of drag performers at several venues in the city. Kirchoff has documented contemporary group and communal living in West Philadelphia, along with the myriad organizations, causes and groups that have grown out of these houses. Over the last several years, Stockbridge has made a virtually encyclopedic portrait of the people and places of the Kensington section of North Philadelphia.
Philadelphia Seen is curated by John Caperton, the Jensen Bryan Curator of The Print Center in Philadelphia.
