Eagles shot down by Roman Catholic

BucksLocalSports Editor Pitted against Philadelphia Catholic League (PCL) unbeaten rival Roman Catholic last night on its home court, Conwell-Egan registered 27 points in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Cahillites by nine points in the frame.

“I don’t think ConwellEgan scored 27 points in a half before this,” admitted CEC senior Mike Kelly, afterward.

While 27 points by any team in any quarter is good, it wasn’t enough last night against Roman (11-4, 6-0). That’s because the Eagles entered the period trailing, 61-30, in a 79-57 win, favor: the Cahillites.

“We have some seniors that have been in the program for years and we have some freshmen that don’t really understand the game very well but they are very talented, that’s why they’re on the court,” said CEC head coach Rick Sabol. “It seems like we go through stretches where we don’t jell well. In the fourth quarter, we were playing together and did some good things EuW Ln WKH firVW TuDrWHr, wH didn’t see that.”

Indeed, this one seemed to get away from Egan from the outset as Roman built a double-digit lead in the opening minutes, thanks to some good perimeter shooting by junior Rashann London and nice work underneath the basket by sophomore Manny Taylor.

“We came back and had a solid second quarter and in the third quarter we turned the ball right back over and that hurts us,” said Sabol.

On the other side of the coin, Roman did not turn the ball over until there was two minutes remaining in the contest, a mid-court steal by Kelly in which he took the ball to the basket and drew an ensuing foul.

Alas, Mike made just one of his two free throws, an ongoing theme for Egan in this one. Kelly made up for it moments later, hitting one of his two-three pointers in the fourth quarter. Senior Ryan Pepito also hit a pair RI WKrHHV Ln WKH finDO IrDPH and sophomore Jordan Burney tipped the 27-point frame off with a driving layup and-one for a threepoint play of his own.
