Council Rock South is the hottest team in girls basketball right now. At one time, the Golden Hawks found themselves at N-P, near the bottom of the pack in the Suburban One ieague ESOi) National Conference.

No longer. After nipping sister school CR North by a P9-PU score, South has won five straight including league wins against SOi National rivals Abington, Truman Egan. 22W SS-PM) and Pennsbury Egan. 24W 4UPS).

On gan. NT in Abington, the Hawks squared off in an SOi National conference showdown. While the home Ghosts were looking to rebound from a tough conference loss to Bensalem two days before, South was seeking to avenge a 5-point loss it suffered at the hands of Abington back in midaecember.

The Hawks emerged victorious in this one, by a count of 5P-44 with the deadly blow coming on a 9-2 run in the third quarter, a period in which South outscored Abington, NS-T.

“The third quarter just killed us,” stated Abington skipper Nadia aucan. “We stopped rebounding and they capitalized.”

The Ghosts were able to stymie a Council Rock run in the first quarter when they opened the game, U-M. Abington then answered, promptly scoring the next nine points. The Hawks stifled any Abington attempts at a counter run in the second half by grabbing key rebounds and winning the always important 5M-5M balls which paid big dividends to South’s second half control.

“It’s that simple, they just out hustled us. bvery loose ball they went for, nobody wanted it,” aucan said.

South guard Alexis Hofstaedter was not only a key to the Hawks’ third quarter run; she had a game-high N5 points and was the only player to score in every quarter.

“She was smarter, she played smarter, she knew what she needed to do,” aucan said.

Abington had a size advantage in their front court which led to them getting plenty of good and close looks at the basket. rn-

fortunately for the Ghosts, too many of those attempts were left unconverted.

While Abington was struggling to hit from in close, South was hitting its shots which consisted of a lot of mid- to longrange jump shots including five three-point field goals. South’s ability to hit open shots and free throws down the stretch allowed the Hawks to keep the Ghosts at arm’s length and walk out with a victory.

South has won five straight including a 47-34 victory over Wissahickon Jan. 19 in the Suburban One Basketball Challenge and a 45-37 triumph over the Hill School Jan. 20 in the Blue Star Invitational.
