‘Nunsense’ opens 30th season N

-

EWTOWN – The Newtown Arts Company’s live stage production of “Nunsense” a musical comedy by Dan Goggin, opens the company’s 30th anniversary season on Thursday, Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the historic Newtown Theatre, 120 N. State Street in Newtown Borough.

“Nunsense” begins when the Little Sisters of Hoboken discover that their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, has accidentally poisoned 52 of the sisters, and they are in dire need of funds for the burials. The sisters decide that the best way to raise the money is to put on a variety show, so they take over the Newtown Theatre, which is currently between productions of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” and “Grease.”

Here we meet Reverend Mother Regina, a former circus performer played by Regina Deavitt of Northeast Philadelphia; Sister Mary Hubert, the Mistress of Novices, played by Jane Landes of Newtown; a streetwise nun from Brooklyn named Sister Robert Anne, played by Amanda Murphy of Langhorne; Sister Mary Leo, a novice who is a wannabe ballerina, portrayed by Samantha Riesenberg of Fort Washington; and the delightfully wacky Sister Mary Amnesia, the nun who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head, played by Jillian Ambs of Newtown.

Other Nuns in the order are Florence Mitchell of Yardley as Sister Mary Euthanasia, Dori Dugan of Ivyland as Sister Mary Dewey Decimal, Jill Laurinaitis Dignan of Yardley as Sister Mary wumba and Mary Kate Pullman of Churchville as Sister Mary Cardelia.

The Newtown Arts Company production of “Nunsense” is under the direction of Mary Liz Ivins of Lawrenceville, New Jersey, with musical direction by Susan den Outer of Langhorne.

Featuring star turns, tap and ballet dancing, an audience quiz, and comic surprises, this show has become an international phenomenon. With more than 5,000 productions worldwide, it has been translated into 21 languages.
