The Ambler Gazette - - OPINION - By Nick Iuele

Upper Dublin scored 2U points on earry p Truman in the second quarter and cruised to a 2U-T victory.

“I think we played well in spotsI” Upper Dublin coach Bret ptover said. “We had good energy and capitalized on turnoversI which helped us a lot.”

After a scoreless first quarterI the Cardinals took advantage of turnovers to get on the board early and often. Truman quarterback Jake wolna threw an interception with T:45 to go in the quarterI which Upper Dublin signal-caller John Derr eventually turned into a 15-yard touchdown pass to Reed RapineI giving the Cardinals a T-0 lead.

“lur kids are playing aggressivelyI” ptover said. “YRu sHH fiYH RU sLx Juys Rn a tackle every playI which is good for a young team. Creating turnovers is going to help us immensely as the season goes on.”

7KH nHxW SRssHssLRn dLd not work out much better for Truman. After losing a fumbleI Derr connected with Khalid Weems for a 42-yard touchdown throw to put Upper Dublin up 140. With less than two minutes remaining in the halfI Rapine contributed on the defensive endI picking up a fumble and returned it 21 yards for the Cardinals’ third touchdown.

“Truman pretty much dominated the game until midway through the second quarterI” ptover said. “But we started getting turnovers and our defense played really well. They allowed yardsI but didn’t let them in the end zone.”

Before the halftime whistle blewI Derr added his third touchdown passI a quick strike to the corner of the end zone to Brad phildkrautI providing Upper Dublin with a commanding 2U-0 lead heading into the break.

“When we were up 21-0I ZH dLdn’W HxSHFW WR sFRUH against before the halfI” ptover said. “But we got a few bLJ SODys Dnd JRW Ln fiHOd goal rangeI and then Derr threw a great pass and got us another touchdown. That was huge for usI especially because it came so late in a quarter where we had success.”

Points became sparse from that point forward. The Truman defense settled down and played better in the second halfI while the Upper Dublin defense continued to keep the Tigers out of the end zone. The only other scoring play came 9:41 left in the game when Truman running back Manny Fisher plowed in a one-yard touchdown runI avoiding a complete shutout.

Derr shined the brightest in the gameI completing eight of 12 passes for 10U yards and three touchdowns. The Upper Dublin defense also played very wellI snagging an interception and only allowing 29 passing yards in the shutout.
