The Potluck dinner was attended by a few folks, but memorial just the same. Those attending were: Jim O’Brien, Jim Tittsworth, Andy and Kristin Johnson and their two boys; Alex and Jacob, Barry and Carole Brown, Ken and Barbara Autry with their grandson Caleb and Van and Kathy Johnson. Sorry other folks missed the delicious food that was served.

We would like to think all the bad weather is behind us, but undoubtedly we will feel some more deep cold before it’s garden planting time. My winter onions that have been in my garden since we moved here is still thriving. Days when the weather is pretty we all get the garden bug. But, if you don’t have a green house please refrain from planting any thing other than potatoes or onions. If you go by the good old Farmers Almanac it really isn’t time yet to put in a garden. My grandmother said the only way to plant your garden was by the moon. Above ground crops: Crops that produce their yield above the soil (corn, peppers, squash, etc.) Root Crops: Crops that produce their yield below the soil (potatoes, radishes, carrots, etc.)

Seedbeds: A bed of soil cultivated for planting seeds or seedlings before being transplanted.

Seedlings: Young plants—especially ones that grow from seeds (rather than from a cutting). A green house is wonderful to get your seeds started, if you prefer that method. The stores start setting out small plants and tease us with pretty green broccoli and other small plants. But don’t put them in the ground now. It’s to cold underneath the ground at the moment. Back to use grandma’s method. A good way to start a plant if you just have the bug is start your seeds in a ice cream sugar cone. Keep them either in a back room or a mudroom if you have one. When they are at a good size and the weather is nice (grandma’s advice don’t plant until after mother’s day). You can plant your ice cream cones with your plants in them, into the ground and the cones will go down in the ground and disintegrate and be just fine. I have made the mistake of planting way too early. It is so tempting when you have a beautiful day pop up. Do not let that sweet talk you into putting those tomatoes in, you will be disappointed. If you crave fresh veggies like we do, you best bet is to invest in a small green house. You have the fresh veggies and you do not have to expose your plants to a sudden winter blast.

If you were raised like we were, there was always vegetables canned in the cellar from the season before. Go down in the cellar and pop open a can of green beans to be included in dinner that will take care of your urging. Canning isn’t really that difficult now a days like back in the old days. With insta pots and other convenient pressure cookers, all you need is a couple of pounds of green beans from the store (while in season at the store) and proceed with the job. It’s nothing like before when you had the job of cleaning, snapping and then cooking and pouring into your jars for keeping throughout that season. However, there was nothing like sneaking in the kitchen to watch grandma standing over the big canning pot putting the green beans into each jar as she wiped off the edge of the jar and fastened on each lid. After that, each time we’d open up a jar of green beans I could just see her there with her apron on with her look of satisfaction at her finished project. It’s just not the same to open up a can of Jolly Green Giant from the store.

A temporary halt is being put on the recycled cans. The location in Antlers has shut down their facilities where we took the cans. Until we can find a location close, we are stopping collecting cans. Sorry for the inconvenient. I will let everyone know when we can resume recycling.

Please keep your loved ones in your prayers always. Time is just a fleeting thing. Thanks to everyone that has been helping keep the land around the community building nice and clean.
