Textile artists share work at quilt exhibits

- By Weldon B. Johnson

Fans of textile art as well as classic quilting are invited to check out this year’s version of the Art Quilts exhibit.

This year’s show, “Art Quilts Year XVII: Integrating a Paradox,” continues through Jan. 20 at the Exhibition Gallery at the Chandler Center for the Arts, 250 N. Arizona Ave. The exhibit features more than 60 quilts created by artists from throughout the country.

In addition to the main show, there is also an invitational exhibit featuring 25 quilts by nationally known quilters. This portion of the exhibit is featured at the Vision Gallery at 10 E. Chicago St.

Admission is free to both exhibits.

The annual Art Quilts exhibit showcases some of the best examples of fabric art. Though traditional quilts are always part of the exhibit, many of the pieces on display stretch the definitions of the medium.

The pieces encompass a wide variety of examples, ranging from a representation of the Crab Nebula to a photo-realistic rendition of graffiti in Columbus, Ohio.

Adriene Buffington, an Arizona textile artist, curated the exhibit. In a written statement,
