Gilling’s 3-pointers fuel victory on road

-

LUBBOCK, Texas — Jonathan Gilling scored 18 points on a career-high six 3-pointers Saturday to lead Arizona State to a 77-62 win over Texas Tech.

Jahii Carson also scored 18 for the Sun Devils (10-2), playing their first road game of the season. ASU played two games at a neutral site earlier this season. With the victory, the Sun Devils matched their win total from last season.

Gilling’s family traveled to Lubbock from Denmark to watch him play, and he did not disappoint, helping the Sun Devils shoot 52 percent (14 for 27) from the 3-point line.

“I think I shot under 50 percent, even though I made six, so everything wasn’t falling,” said Gilling, who was 6 for 12 on 3point attempts and 6 of 15 overall. “But we’ve been working on shooting in practice. It felt good today, and we’ve just got to keep working.”

Gilling carried the load in the first half, hitting five of his 3-pointers, and Carson took over after the break with 16 second-half points.

“He’s a tremendous player,” Arizona State coach Herb Sendek said of Carson. “He plays with a lot of poise and composure. We all feed off his penetration and his energy.”

Carrick Felix added 13 points and nine rebounds for the Sun Devils, and Evan Gordon had 12 points.

Jaye Crockett led the Red Raiders (5-4) with 11 points and nine rebounds.

Arizona State led by 15 points with a little more than nine minutes left in the first half. The Red Raiders cut the deficit to four early in the second half.

The Sun Devils extended the lead back to 17 with 2:32 left in the game.

“The score at the end of the game isn’t indicative of how close it was,” Sendek said. Arizona St. FG FT Reb
