Afghan girl recovers in Long Island hospital

OCEANSIDE, N.Y. — A 6-yearold girl from Afghanista­n is recovering at a Long Island hospital after undergoing surgery on her face to repair damage done by a Taliban bullet.

Newsday reports that the child, named Marizeh, held a toy unicorn and blew kisses as a nurse carried her past wellwisher­s before her surgery Friday at South Nassau Communitie­s Hospital in Oceanside, N.Y.

The girl’s father and 3-yearold brother died when their car was attacked by Taliban fighters.

Marizeh survived a gunshot wound to the face, but lost her eye and suffered nasal passage damage that interfered with her breathing.

Arrest in Ala. nightclub shooting 7 hours later

HOOVER, Ala. — Police have arrested a suspect in the shooting deaths of two people overnight at a nightclub near Birmingham, Ala.

Hoover police Capt. James Coker said U.S. marshals made an arrest at 7 a.m., seven hours after the shooting inside Martini’s Lounge in Hoover, Ala. The suspect has not yet been charged.

The victims are a-19-year-old man, Monterio Alonzo PeeblesKel­logg, 19, and a 20-year-old woman, Lakenya Chaniese Moton, 20.

A third victim was treated at UAB Trauma Center and released after gunshot injuries that were not life-threatenin­g. Coker didn’t give the person’s identity.
