Mesa ruins are program topic

TEMPE — A discussion about the Hohokam village and canals in west Mesa will be led by Jerry Howard, curator of anthropolo­gy at the Arizona Museum of Natural History, and Tom Wilson, director of the Arizona Museum of Natural History,11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Tempe History Museum.

The talk, “The Mesa Grande Ruins: The History of the Hohokam Site, The Preservati­on and Restoratio­n Efforts, and What’s There For You To See,” will be for the monthly Tempe Historical Society lunch program. The story of the origins of the village and its people will be told as well as what happened to the village after it was abandoned.

Women’s conference in Mesa

MESA — Living Word Bible Church, 3520 E Brown Road, will host the Extraordin­ary Women’s Conference April 25-27. The event will emphasize Arizona foster kids and orphans.

The conference opens with a fashion show directed by Ketonya Bankston, a national fashion model who will be joined by 10 celebrity models. Scheduled speakers and workshops will aim to provide what organizers call “a weekend of inspiratio­n.”

Goodyear police in benefit run

GOODYEAR — The Goodyear Police Department will participat­e in the 29th annual Law Enforcemen­t Torch Run for Special Olympics Arizona.

Goodyear officers will complete their part of the run between 10:30 a.m. and noon April 26 as they help to raise funds for and awareness of Special Olympics athletes.

Holocaust remembranc­e set

SUN CITY — The West Valley Ministeria­l Associatio­n will hold a Holocaust remembranc­e service at 3 p.m. today at Lakeview United Methodist Church, 10298 W. Thunderbir­d Blvd.

All are welcome, and donations will benefit Benevilla, 16752 N. Greasewood St., Surprise. A reception will follow.

Benevilla is a non-profit group that seeks to provide a safety net for those who may be isolated and need assistance to maintain their independen­ce.

Donated baby supplies sought

GLENDALE — The Salvation Army is partnering with Fry’s Food Stores and Cox Communicat­ions for a baby shower drive that runs through April 21.

Donation boxes are at the front of Fry’s stores.

Items being collected include diapers, wipes, bottles, formula and baby shampoo/wash.
