SUN ANGEL CLASSIC

- By John Mckelvey

It was Ladies Night for Arizona State at the Sun Angel Classic on Saturday.

After Keia Pinnick recorded the best heptathalon score in the country — 5,791 points in the 2013 Jim Click Combine Events in Tucson on Friday — her Sun Devil teammate Christabel Nettey broke the long-jump school record with two jumps of 22.14 feet on Saturday.

She bested the school mark of 21.72, set by Jacinta Bartholomew in 1989.

The two jumps were long enough for the “A” standard to qualify for the 2013 world championships in Moscow.

Nettey didn’t only decimate the competition in the long jump. She also recorded the eighth-best 100- meter hurdle time in school history earlier in the day.

Another stellar performance came from Shelby Houlihan, who ran 4:13.64 in the 1,500 meters, destroying the top 1,500 time in the country, 4:17.22 by Utah’s Amanda Mergaert, and the school record of 4:17.98 set by Priscilla Hein in 1999.

“I always think I’m an 800 runner, but I know I can do really well in the 1,500,” Houlihan said.

“I’m getting the confidence to know how to race and run fast.”

This gives ASU five top-ranked female athletes in their events. The other two are throwers Chelsea Cassulo in the hammer, and Anna Jelmini in the discus.

“That’s pretty awesome,” Houlihan said.

“We have a really good team. So I know if everyone competes at their potential, we will be a force to be reckoned with.”

Jelmini had her second-best career throw of 198.85 feet at the Mesa Classic on Friday and followed it up with a solid194.09-foot performance Saturday night.

“I’m really trying to stay consistent,” Jelmini said. “I’m just trying to work out the kinks, so when the actual season comes around, I’ll have it down.”

On the men’s side, Jordan Clarke was the top collegiate performer with a toss of 56.91 meters in the discus.

It was his personal best, and he became the only thrower in ASU history to be in the top 10 in three throwing events —the hammer, discus and shot put.

Sprinter Ryan Milus won the 100-meter dash in 10.29, which is the eighth-best time in the country.
