Be diplomatic on Mexico

- Phoenix Phoenix The writer is CEO of Beatitudes Campus.

Regarding Yanira Maldonado, the lady who was held in a Mexican jail because 12 pounds of marijuana was found under her bus seat during a return trip to Phoenix:

Some are saying she was framed by the Mexican authorities. Some are saying this is usually the Mexican policy. Has anyone heard of the word “diplomacy”?

Hate begets hate, and making hate statements against Mexico and wrongly accusing the Mexican authorities of framing her were not the best

Celebrating older people

May was Older Americans Month, and I celebrated by acknowledging and honoring our older generations. Today, I ask you to focus on what older people continue to bring to our communities rather than what they used to bring to the table.

I know a lot of older people. Their commitment to living fully is an inspiration to me as I watch them plant and expand a community garden; tutor kids at the local school; sew clothing for poor children; participate actively in the election process and public-policy debates; raise money for college scholarships for high-school students; raise grandchildren; consult across a wide variety of professions; jump out of airplanes to celebrate reaching age 80. A tip-ofthe-iceberg list for sure!

I believe every month should be Older Americans Month. I invite you to cast away images of “old folks” rocking away on the front porch. Replace it with images of people living life like the rest of us — with hope, determination, the occasional disappointment and optimism. They even fall in love! Remember, they’re old, not dead!
