WHERE ARE THEY NOW? PAY LEADERS FROM 2011
» Richard Adkerson. The chief executive officer of FreeportMcMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. has topped the statewide pay scale for two straight years. But Adkerson’s 2012 compensation of $19.8 million is far less than the $82 million he earned in 2011. Freeport-McMoran’s financial performance has dimmed a bit as commodity prices cooled. » James Moffett. FreeportMcMoRan’s chairman was the state’s highest-paid executive in 2010, when he earned $47.5 million. That dipped to $32.2 million in 2011, when he finished second. Moffett’s compensation was down again last year, to $17.5 million. The company’s stock price also has retreated, making option exercises less valuable. Freeport-McMoRan reports another measure, “total direct compensation,” that came to $17.3 million in 2012 for both Moffett and Adkerson. » Jonah Shacknai. The CEO of Medicis Pharmaceutical Corp. was perennially among the statewide pay leaders, finishing third in 2011 with compensation of $25.3 million and ninth in 2010 with $6.4 million. But since Medicis Pharmaceutical was bought last year by Valeant Pharmaceuticals and no longer is an independent company, Shacknai has dropped off our list. » James O’Connor. He retired as chairman and CEO of trashhauler Republic Services Inc. in 2011 and thus no longer shows up among the state’s pay leaders. O’Connor earned $22.4 million in 2011 and $8.7 million in 2010, finishing fourth and fifth in those years. » Donald Slager. The new Republic Services CEO finished 17th last year with compensation of $4.7 million. That was down from the $14.8 million Slager logged in 2011 because he realized less value from stock awards.
