Corbin’s day:

- — Nick Piecoro

Corbin’s streak of 10 consecutive quality starts to open a season came to an end. It was the second-longest streak in club history, trailing only RHP Daniel Hudson, who had 11 in a row in 2010.

“The whole game he didn’t have good stuff,” C Wil Nieves said. “His slider wasn’t there. His fastball was cutting. He kept us in the game. He didn’t feel good at all, but he battled and gave us an opportunity to win the game.” Early struggles: Corbin hit Starlin Castro and Scott Hairston and walked Anthony Rizzo in the first inning to load the bases. He then walked Dioner Navarro to force in a run, giving the Cubs an early lead.

Corbin said he threw more change-ups than he had in previous games, one way of compensating for his not-as-effective slider.

“It was good,” he said. “I thought I just kept them off balance a little bit after the first inning. I think I felt pretty good. I'm just glad our offense put up the runs to get the win.” Nieves comes through: Nieves had three hits, two coming with runners in scoring position, to improve his already strong numbers in games in which he starts. Nieves is 13 for 33 (.394) with five RBIs in his nine starts. “I feel good, man,” he said. “I’m really working really hard in the cages when I don’t play and in BP, just getting into good habits, and once I go in the game I don’t think about mechanics. It’s just muscle memory, and I’m just trying to see the ball and hit the ball.” View from the press box: Corbin was bound to have an imperfect start or two, which is kind of what’s happened the past two times out. But he’s kept his team in the game both times, and the Diamondbacks have wound up winning each of them. At a time when the rotation is facing some questions, it’ll be important for the team to continue to count on stability from Corbin.
