I became a journalist because: I have a passion to serve my community and help make it a better place. I am driven by the positive impact we can have on a community — by helping to identify problems that need to be addressed and by celebrating successes that need to be spotlighted.

Most memorable letter from a reader: I cherish the correspondence and feedback that I receive, but this more recent letter resonates because it relates to the tragic Yarnell Hill Fire and the deaths of 19 brave firefighters. I’m incredibly proud of the excellent work produced for The Arizona Republic, 12 News and azcentral.com as were many of our customers. The letter says in part: “In appreciation of your writers, reporters, photographers, and all your employees at all levels, we applaud you. Your daily coverage was superb, beyond all expectations. You are ‘first-class winners’ for the best coverage of an extremely sensitive, heart-wrenching, tragic event.”

The Republic story that may have the most impact: The ongoing review of the public-pension system. Since 2010, senior reporter Craig Harris, along with support from other reporters, has worked to explain the spiraling costs to taxpayers of the pension system for governmental employees.
