Yet, the inspiration that guided Meyer to help clients with much more modest homes remains a key part of his work ethic today and a vital factor to his success and survival during the dour economy.

“I have a passion for the job, but the key is really caring about my clients, what they want and what they’re trying to achieve by selling and moving to a new house,” he said.

A native of Edwardsville, Ill., Meyer moved to Arizona at age 20. His brother had moved west for a job and sent Meyer photos of the beautiful weather. Meyer packed his bags. When he arrived, he met a man his age who was successful in real estate and showed him the ropes.

What drives Meyer today, however, is much closer to his own home. His younger son, Colton, 2, was born with microphthalmia, a condition in which the eyes are underdeveloped, resulting in blindness. This came at a time when Meyer’s career was picking up. He and his wife reached out for anyone who could help or provide guidance, with little luck.

Meyer eventually found a specialist in California who performed a series of surgeries that resulted, so far, in Colton, having limited yet undetermined vision.

This struggle has inspired Meyer to donate 10 percent of his commission to charity, with 5 percent going to the charity of his client’s choice and 5 percent benefiting efforts to assist blind children and their families. Meyer works with the Foundation for Blind Children and is working to establish his own charitable organization as well.

“Colton really changed our lives. ... He opened our eyes to so much in the world,” Meyer said.
