- BASKETBALL: CHICAGO C NOAH TO REST NAGGING GROIN INJURY TENNIS: WEARY NADAL TO SKIP SWISS TOURNEY NEXT WEEK

Chicago Bulls C will be held out of all basketball-related activities for about a week in hopes that the rest will clear up his lingering groin strain.

Noah was injured early in training camp and missed the Bulls’ first three preseason games before playing 19 minutes Wednesday night against the Detroit Pistons.

» The Atlanta Dream decided not to renew the contract of general manager and head coach Fred Williams.

The team said in a news release Friday that Williams’ contract ends Nov. 30. He will move to a consultant position as a new head coach and general manager takes over.

As the Dream coach, Williams had a 24-20 regular season record and a 5-6 playoff record. The team made it to the WNBA finals this year.

» Hall of Fame C Bill Russell was arrested this week at Seattle-Tacoma Internatio­nal Airport after Transporta­tion Security Administra­tion officials found a loaded gun in his luggage.

Russell was arrested Wednesday night as he attempted to go through security. Airport spokesman Perry Cooper confirmed Friday night that Russell was cited for having a weapon in a prohibited area. Russell’s .38-caliber pistol was confiscate­d, and he was released.

Top-ranked Rafael Nadal has pulled out of next week’s Swiss Indoors due to fatigue.

Nadal has played 74 competitiv­e matches since recovering from a knee injury in February, which had kept the Spaniard out for seven months. He has lost only five times.

» Top-seeded outlasted 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (3) Friday to reach the semifinals of the Erste Bank Open in Vienna.

Tsonga will take on a place in Sunday’s final, while secondseed­ed Tommy Haas faces in the other semifinal.
