Chandler picks new police chief
Sean Duggan a Scottsdale police veteran
Scottsdale Assistant Police Chief Sean Duggan has been selected as Chandler police chief, Chandler City Manager Rich Dlugas said.
Duggan and Christopher Vicino, assistant chief at the Riverside, Calif., Police Department, were chosen as the final two candidates from six semifinalists last month.
Dlugas, who made his decision Wednesday, said he chose Duggan for his “ability to work with the department and continue to grow the department” and its employees. Duggan oversees the Scottsdale Police Department’s Investigative Services Bureau/Personnel Development.
“He just seemed to be a good fit for our department,” Dlugas said, and Duggan’s “familiarity with the Valley and local police agencies and police enforcement already in the Valley will help him in terms of coming to Chandler and making an impact.”
Duggan’s tentative start date is Jan.13. Assistant Police Chief Dave Neuman is serving as acting chief.
Duggan could not be reached for comment on Thursday.
“I am very proud of Chief Duggan and this wonderful accomplishment,” Scottsdale Police Chief Alan Rodbell said in a statement to The “Chandler is a great city and Chief Duggan will work hard to support the City leadership in achieving their vision.”
The Chandler Law Enforcement Association welcomed Duggan in a post on its website Thursday evening: “We look forward to working with Chief Duggan to continue to make the Chandler Police Department one of the top agencies in Arizona.” Duggan joined the Scottsdale Police Department in 1986 as an officer. He was named assistant chief in 2006.
During his time with the department, Duggan has supervised the city’s Youth/Gang Intervention Unit and served as a SWAT commander and a Special Investigations section commander. The city’s previous police chief, Sherry Kiyler, retired in June after nine years as Chandler’s chief.
