Eatery, B&B, museum are 3 of Tucson’s gems

-

Here are three things to do on your next visit to Tucson.

Downtown Kitchen & Cocktails

Janos Wilder has been a Tucson institution for more than 30 years, but his downtown restaurant gives no hints of being stale or hewing to tradition. The James Beard award-winning chef was French-trained, and the cuisine here runs the gamut. There’s red curry catfish, an Italian-American cioppino and Moroccan-spiced chicken. Sit at the bar and get an up-close look at bartenders crafting your cocktail, most made with homemade syrups and infused liquors. That’s also the spot to enjoy the interesting bar menu, which features a massive roasted marrow bone, a tender taco made from lamb’s tongue and perhaps the only happyhour burger in the state that contains foie gras.

Royal Elizabeth Bed & Breakfast Inn

This six-room Victorian mansion is run by a couple: he a real-estate investor and she an attorney. He makes the breakfast, which comes out in several courses. One morning began with a broiled peach topped with cinnamon and brown sugar. That was followed by an asparagus and goat-cheese frittata, accompanied by tomatoes and potatoes from the farmers market. The inn is nestled in the heart of downtown, putting most attractions within walking distance. The six rooms, named for family members of long-ago owners, are large and dreamy with hardwood floors, antiques and a few Victorian frills. The flowery garden holds a pool and hot tub. Rooms cost $169$229.
