The Arizona Republic

First quarter:

- — Zach Buchanan

Arizona State took the ball into Arizona territory but settled for a pair of Zane Gonzalez field goals. The Wildcats wouldn’t keep the Sun Devils out of the end zone the third time around, however. After a UA punt went for a touchback, ASU marched from its 20 to the Arizona 38 thanks to a couple big plays by De’Marieyea Nelson. On second and 4 from the 38, Kelly faked a run up the middle and hit backup tight end Darwin Rogers on the left sideline with a jump pass, and Rogers went untouched for a score to put ASU up 13-0. On the other side of the ball, the Wildcats couldn’t do much on their first two possessions, punting both times. UA seemed to right that trend as the quarter came to a close, as star running back Ka’Deem Carey ran the ball five times as the Wildcats advanced to midfield. Second quarter: The Wildcats continued to show faith in Carey in the second quarter, but with little results. Arizona twice handed the ball to its talented back on fourth and 1 at midfield early in the period, and twice Carey was stonewalled by the ASU defense for a turnover on downs. In between, ASU was able to tack onto its lead as D.J. Foster ran three times in four plays — for 29, 4 and 14 yards — scoring on the last run to make it 20-0 Sun Devils. The Wildcats continued giving the Sun Devils the ball in prime field position later in the quarter, as UA quarterback B.J. Denker threw a deep pass seemingly for no one from his own 22-yard line. ASU safety Alden Darby intercepted it, returning it to the Wildcats 31. ASU scored five plays later on a 1-yard dive by Nelson to go up 27-0. The Wildcats offense finally got going on the ensuing possession, as Denker led them 78 yards for a score, going 6 for 7 for 75 yards and scoring on a 1-yard keeper. An uninspired ASU three-andout gave UA even more life, but the Wildcats missed a 42-yard field-goal attempt to give the Sun Devils the ball back with 1:23 left. Kelly hit Foster for a 16-yard catch and run and then connected with Jaelen Strong on a 50-yard bomb to the Wildcat 9, but ASU settled for another Gonzalez field goal to go up 30-7 at the half. Third quarter: The Wildcats seemed poised to battle back into the game as the second half began. Starting the half with the ball, Arizona drove 75 yards for a score to make it a two-touchdown game. Carey accounted for 59 yards on the drive, including an 8-yard touchdown run. ASU gained one first down and punted, pinning UA at its 16. The Wildcats again moved the ball systematically, but at third and 4 at the Sun Devils 38, Denker was intercepted on an underneath route by safety Damarious Randall, who returned the pick 64 yards for a score to make it 37-14. The Wildcats kept coming, though, scoring late in the quarter to again cut the Sun Devils lead to 16. On second and 1 at the ASU 30, Denker scrambled for a long gain and fumbled at around the 5-yard line. The loose ball was recovered in the end zone by Garic Wharton for a score. That seemed to wake up the ASU offense, which had managed just one first down and 1 yard on its first two possessions of the half. After an incompletion and a sack, Kelly scrambled 17 yards and then hit Strong for a 61-yard score to put the Sun Devils ahead 44-21. ASU held onto the momentum on the ensuing kickoff as De’Marieya Nelson forced and recovered a Daniel Jenkins fumble to give ASU the ball in Wildcats territory entering the fourth quarter. Fourth quarter: The Sun Devils turned that prime field position into a back-breaking score as Foster ran 7 yards for his second rushing touchdown of the game early in the period to put ASU up 51-21. After UA turned the ball over on downs at its 34 — again with Carey stuffed on fourth and 1 — Kelly and Denker traded interceptions. Eventually, ASU scored a cosmetic touchdown on a 2-yard run by De’Marieya Nelson to give the Sun Devils a 58-21 advantage. Key player: With touchdown leader Marion Grice on the sideline with crutches, Foster more than shouldered the extra load. Foster 124 rushing yards and two scores on 24 carries, and added two catches for 26 yards, earning the Bob Moran MVP Award for the game. Key moment: Randall’s “Pick-6.” The Wildcats, down 30-14, looked poised to score for the second time in the third quarter and possibly cut it to a one-score lead, but Randall turned the tables to give ASU a nice 23-point cushion. Key number: 0 for 3 — Three times Arizona lined up to go for it on fourth and 1, and three times ASU stopped Carey for no gain. The Wildcats entered the game having gained a first down 7 of 15 times when running on fourth down, gaining an average of 1.73 yards an attempt.
