from sophomore D.J. Foster and junior De’Marieya Nelson, who combined for 206 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns. Foster, rushing for a career-high 124 yards, was the game’s MVP.

“Obviously, Marion is a tremendous player,” ASU offensive coordinator Mike Norvell said. “He’s done so much for our offense, but I was really proud of the way D.J. and De’Marieya stepped up. We know in this game there will be people who go down at times, but you have to step up and be ready when your number is called. I’m just really proud of the whole offense.”

Turnovers costly

Arizona didn’t help itself Saturday night. The Wildcats committed four turnovers, all leading to ASU points. Senior B.J. Denker — who entered the contest with just four interceptions — threw three against the Sun Devils, one of which junior Damarious Randall returned for a touchdown.

“With the ‘pick six,’ they just had someone out there watching my eyes,” Denker said. “He knew what was coming and played it well.”

The Wildcats dropped to 7-5 and 4-5 in the Pac-12. They’re looking at a lower-level bowl. CBS Sports projects Arizona to play San Diego State in the NewMexico Bowl, where the Wildcats played last season.

“If we’re in one of the early ones, obviously, a priority for us in the next two weeks is recruiting,” Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez said. “You’ve only got two weeks to recruit, and if you’ve got an early bowl game then you have to practice during those weeks. I’ll prepare a schedule where coaches are probably on the road the next four or five days and then practice a bit on the weekend.”

Rodriguez doesn’t expect the Territorial Cup loss to linger.

“I told the team this shouldn’t define them,” he said. “It’s hard right now. We’re all going to be ticked off for 24 hours or more. But this shouldn’t define our senior class, this shouldn’t define our team. ... We’re going to keep getting better.”

ASU freshman Zane Gonzalez on Saturday kicked three more field goals — from 38, 21 and 23 yards — giving him a school-record 18 in a row.
