Applewhite, Samuel Parham III

84, of Scottsdale, AZ died peacefully on Monday, Feb. 17, 2014. He was born in Phoenix on April 8, 1929 and attended grammar and high schools in Berkeley and Oakland, CA. As a 17 year old he entered Stanford University, ultimately graduating from Stanford Law School in 1952. He subsequently served two years as 1stLt. in the US Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps, 1952-’54 during the Korean War. Until his death, Sam was the last survivor from the original group of attorneys that founded and became Ryley, Carlock & Applewhite. He practiced law with that Phoenix firm for over 50 years. Sam had a keen interest in Arizona history, recounting with enthusiasm and amazing detail its myriad stories. He also had a great love for Arizona’s deserts and high mountains. He served as President of the Board of Directors of Boyce Thompson Southwestern Arboretum near Superior, AZ for many years and was founder and President of Butterfly Lodge Museum in Greer, AZ. Sam and his wife Karen have had a cabin in Greer since 1976. Sam also enjoyed his weekly bridge games with fellow members from the Friday Men’s Prayer Group of St. Barnabas on the Desert Episcopal Church, where he was a longtime member. He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Karen; children: Robin (Chris) Howarth; Jennifer Bridgman; Todd (Becky) Applewhite; grandchildren Audrey Howarth and Trevor Howarth; and brother, Robert Applewhite. Memorial services will be held Friday, March 7, 2014 at 2 p.m. at St. Barnabas on the Desert Episcopal Church, 6715 N. Mockingbird Ln., Scottsdale, AZ 85253. A reception will follow at the church.
