It was raining in parts of the Valley on Friday afternoon.

This might not always qualify as news in the Phoenix area but rain is a rare sight here in May. A series of low-pressure systems have moved through the Valley this month that have brought some precipitation along.

Today’s forecast calls for clear skies, but cool temperatures in the mid 70s. Sunday should be about 10 degrees warmer.

The precipitation that was making it to the ground on Friday afternoon ranged from light to barely noticeable but in the past month more than an inch of rain has fallen in some areas of Maricopa County, including Fountain Hills.

The rain gauge at Sky Harbor Airport had recorded a trace of rain by 2 p.m., making this the first time in more than10 years the airport saw rain on May 8.

May is traditionally one of the Valley's driest months. There has only been measurable rain in May in Phoenix eight times in the past 20 years.

While there was rain in the Valley, parts of northern Arizona near Flagstaff saw rare May snow showers.

The systems have also led to unseasonably cool temperatures which - for once - might trump rain in terms of newsworthiness.

The last time Phoenix saw a high temperature of lower than 70 degrees in the month of May was in 1998 when the high topped out at 69 degrees on May 13, according to the National Weather Service.

The temperature on Friday was sitting at 67 degrees at about 1:15 p.m., though it climbed into the 70s once the clouds cleared. The record for the lowest high temperature on May 8 is 66 degrees set in 1930.

But the Valley's Midwestern spring will be fleeting, according to forecasts.

On Saturday, expect partly sunny skies with a 10 percent chance of showers in the morning with highs ranging from 73 to 78 degrees and lows from 53 to 62.

Sunday should be mostly sunny and warmer with highs in the mid-to-upper 80s and lows in the mid-to-lower 60s.
