Tomas connects for 10th HR of August

- BOB MCMANAMAN AZCENTRAL SPORTS

If Reggie Jackson was Mr. October, Yasmany Tomas is Señor August.

The Diamondbacks slugger clobbered his 10th home run at Chase Field this month, extending his own franchise record with a pinch-hit, three-run blast Sunday during an 11-2 rout of the Reds. No Arizona player has ever hit so many homers at home in any month in the team’s 19-year history.

According to STATS LLC, the last National League hitter to smack at least 10 homers at home in a single month was the Rockies’ Troy Tulowitzki in September of 2010.

Sunday’s homer was Tomas’ teamleading 27th this season, which is already three times the number he hit a year ago in his first year in the majors. Ten of Tomas’ last 19 hits, in fact, have been home runs. Sunday’s homer was his first this season as a pinch hitter.

“Yeah, he wasn’t happy about not being in the lineup,” manager Chip Hale said. “He actually talked to me, spoke very good English, said he was ready and his back felt fine, why wasn’t he in the lineup. So I explained, ‘I wanted Michael Bourn in right today’ and ‘Be ready to come off the bench and do something.’

“So when (pitching) Mike (Butcher) came in and said, ‘I think that’s enough for (starting pitcher) Archie (Bradley) at 88 (pitches)’ … I said, ‘I agree. Tomas, get ready to hit.’ And sure enough it’s first and second, nobody out, and he hits a three-run homer, so I look like a genius.”

Hale said Tomas approached him shortly before the game in a hallway when the player pleaded to be put in the starting lineup.

“He’s like, ‘I’m good to play. I’m fine.’ That’s what I want. I want him to play every day,” Hale said.

Goldy, Segura sit

First baseman Paul Goldschmidt took a prearranged day off on Sunday and wasn’t in the starting lineup. Neither was second baseman Jean Segura, who left Saturday’s game early because of stomach issues.

“His stomach is still a little upset,” Hale said. “He could probably play off the bench, but he’s not going to start.”

With the Diamondbacks not playing on Monday or Thursday, Hale thought it was best to give both regulars an extra day of rest. The time off is well deserved, he said, adding there are other reasons to sit starters on occasion.

“I think they’ve all played admirably,” Hale said. “When you start seeing performances tail off at this point, that’s when you try to give guys days off, too. I don’t see that. The last couple days have been tough on all the hitters because their pitchers have pitched really well. Sometimes that make it look like guys are tailing off, but you always have to give the guy credit across the way.”

Hale said center fielder A.J. Pollock, who made his third straight start Sunday since being activated from the disabled list following elbow surgery, is scheduled to start both of Arizona’s games in San Francisco on Tuesday and Wednesday.

After going 0 for 8 in his first two games, Pollock was 3 for 5 on Sunday with three singles, two runs scored and two stolen bases.

Campos intriguing

Right-hander Vicente Campos not only gave a huge lift to the Diamondbacks’ bullpen Saturday in his majorleague debut by eating up 5 2/3 innings during a 13-0 loss, he also offered up some intrigue about his future with the organization.

Acquired from the Yankees in the Tyler Clippard trade and recalled from Double-A Mobile, Campos, 24, can fill the long relief role at the moment. But that’s probably not where he’ll stay for long.

“No, I don’t think so.” Hale said. … He’s a starter and he pitched well for at Mobile for us. This was just a matter of us needing an arm at that point (on Saturday). We had got so beaten up in the Braves’ game that he was on the roster and we brought him (up). We didn’t know what to expect, but I think he’s a starter.”
