No. 11 UCLA upsets top-ranked Kentucky in Lexington

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Isaac Hamilton scored 19 points, T.J. Leaf had 17 with 13 rebounds and No. 11 UCLA shot 53 percent to beat No. 1 Kentucky 97-92 on Saturday, its second upset of the top-ranked Wildcats in as many years.

The Bruins (9-0) matched their season scoring average to win this showdown of college basketball’s winningest schools in their first-ever visit to Rupp Arena, and end the Wildcats’ 42-game home winning streak. Kentucky (7-1) cut a 14-point second-half deficit to 95-92 on Derek Willis’ 3-pointer with 8.3 seconds remaining but Bryce Alford’s two free throws with 7.4 left sealed the victory.

Besides hitting 35 of 66 from the field, UCLA outrebound­ed Kentucky 41-38 and limited the Wildcats to 41 percent shooting.

At No. 2 Villanova 88, Saint Joseph’s

57: Josh Hart had 16 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for his first career tripledoub­le to lead Villanova.

Hart, the preseason Big East player of the year, continued to show why he is among the best players in the nation. Hart hit three 3s and made 6 of 10 shots from the field overall.

Villanova (8-0) won its 16th straight Big 5 game against Philly-based teams La Salle, Penn, Drexel, Temple and the Hawks. At No. 4 Kansas 89, Stanford 74: Frank Mason III scored 20 points and Devonte Graham delivered an early 3point barrage and finished with 15 for Kansas.

At No. 5 Duke 94, Maine 55: Luke Kennard scored a career-best 35 points and freshman Jayson Tatum finished with 10 points in his long-awaited debut for Duke.

No. 25 West Virginia 66, at No. 6 Virginia 57: Esa Ahmad hit a tie-breaking 3pointer with 1:28 remaining and No. 25 West Virginia closed the game on an 11-2 run to end Virginia’s 24-game home winning streak. At No. 9 Baylor 76, No. 7 Xavier 61: Manu Lecomte scored 24 points and Baylor took over in the second half. At No. 10 Creighton 82, Akron 70: Marcus Foster scored 17 of his seasonhigh 27 points in the opening half, including 13 of Creighton’s first 16.

At No. 15 Purdue 90, Morehead St.

56: Freshman guard Carsen Edwards scored 16 points, and Purdue made 11 3pointers in the first half. At No. 17 Wisconsin 90, Oklahoma 70: Nigel Hayes scored 28 points for Wisconsin.

58: Kelan Martin finished with 30 points and six rebounds, and Tyler Wideman added 10 points and 10 rebounds for Butler. At Providence 63, No. 21 Rhode Island 60: Jalen Lindsey scored nine of his 13 points in the second half and Providence handed Rhode Island its third loss in four games.

At No. 22 Syracuse 77, North Florida

71: Andrew White scored a season-high 26 points and Frank Howard had 10 points, a career-high 13 assists and just two turnovers to lead Syracuse.

At No. 23 Oregon 128, Savannah

State 59: Tyler Dorsey scored a careerhigh 29 points, Dillon Brooks had 22 and Oregon set a school scoring record.

No. 6 Mississipp­i State 85, at Iowa

State 81 (OT): Morgan William scored 24 points, Victoria Vivians had 16 and Mississipp­i State overcame a 17-pointy deficit to beat Iowa State in overtime.

Pac-12 men

At California 83, Alcorn State 59: Ivan Rabb scored 18 of his career-high 26 points in the first half and California beat Alcorn State for its 25th consecutiv­e home win. New Orleans 70, at Washington State 54: Erik Thomas had 17 points and 10 rebounds on Saturday and New Orleans handed Washington State its second home loss in the last week. At Charlotte 69, Oregon State 66: Jon Davis scored eight of his 22 points in the final three minutes as Charlotte held off Oregon State.

USC 91, BYU 84: Jordan McLaughlin scored 24 points and Southern California defeated BYU in the second game of the inaugural Hoophall LA doublehead­er.

Around the State

San Diego 80, at NAU men 65: Mike Green led NAU with 18 points, but the Lumberjack­s’ poor shooting doomed them in a loss to San Diego. At NAU women 82, Denver 67: Northern Arizona shot the Walkup Skydome lights out and led wire-to-wire to pick up a victory over Denver in Flagstaff. Behind senior Rene Coggins’ five 3-pointers, NAU made a season-high 12 long balls and shot a season-best 51.6 percent overall in evening its record to 4-4 this season.
