Good news for Bears: Only 1 game left in a season filled with injuries

-

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - Good news for the Chicago Bears: only one game remains.

They will try to finish a rough season on a strong note when they visit Minnesota. Then they can address a long list of issues after taking a big step backward.

“As a team, we don’t care what our record is, we might be losing, but we’re going to come back and fight and give it our best shot,” running back Jordan Howard said. “We don’t have a ‘don’t care’ mentality. We are all going to fight to the finish.”

A 41-21 loss to Washington on Saturday was as ugly as any this season. It guaranteed the Bears (3-12) will at best match their worst record in 14 years and left open the possibility they will equal their lowest win total in a non-strike year in more than four decades.

Those are striking numbers for a team that insists it is better than the record indicates and it is closer to a turnaround than people realize.

Still, what is the future of quarterback Jay Cutler? And there is no shortage of holes on the roster. Changes might also be in store for the coaching staff.

The fact Chicago was brutalized by injuries, with 19 players on injured reserve, sure didn’t help.

Broncos’ Kayvon Webster taken off field on cart after hit

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Broncos cornerback Kayvon Webster was taken from the field on a cart after getting hurt while covering a touchback in the second quarter Sunday night against the Chiefs.

Webster was running downfield when he was hit high by Chiefs linebacker Terrance Smith, snapping his head back. He lay motionless on the turf for several minutes as both teams were ordered to their sidelines and a stretcher was taken onto the field.

Webster was eventually helped to his feet and climbed into the front seat of the cart.

Broncos defensive end Derek Wolfe had also left the game with a neck injury, while Chiefs wide receiver Chris Conley left with an ankle injury. Both were questionable to return.

Packers-Lions moved to New Year’s night

NEW YORK - The NFC North title showdown between Green Bay and Detroit has been moved to Sunday night on New Year’s Day.

The NFL announced the switch on Christmas Day, and also moved two afternoon games back from 1 p.m. ET to 4:25 p.m. ET: New Orleans at Atlanta and the New York Giants at Washington.

Green Bay (9-6) has won five straight games. Detroit (9-5) plays at Dallas on Monday night before hosting the Packers. Regardless of the outcome of Lions-Cowboys, the game with the Packers will decide the NFC North.

A first-round playoff bye also could be available for the Packers-Lions winner.
