On the mound: LHP Robbie Ray, who will pitch fourth in the starting rotation, made his final tune-up and after retiring the side to open the game, he was greeted by a no-doubt, line drive home run to left by Edwin Encarnacio­n on a 3-1 pitch. Yan Gomes followed with a two-out towering homer to left off Ray in the inning. Ray retired the side in order once again in the third, but walked two batters in the fourth while managing to strike out the side. He left in the fifth having allowed three runs on three hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Extra bases: Mathis had three passed balls, all of which came during a five-run sixth inning by the Indians. … Manager Torey Lovullo was asked about the brutal schedule his team faces in the first two weeks, which includes four straight against the Giants, followed by three games against the Indians, and then a seven-game trip that features three games against the Giants again followed by four straight in Los Angeles against the Dodgers. “To be honest with you, I don’t think these guys are so focused on that, but if you would mention it to them, I guarantee you they would be ready for that challenge and say, ‘Let’s get this thing going, let’s see where we are, let’s see how we stack up against the best.’ ” Lovullo said.
