Phoenix officer saves tow driver from crash

-

A Phoenix police sergeant-in-training was injured Saturday night when he pushed a tow-truck driver out of the way of an oncoming crash.

The officer was standing at Second Street and Greenway Parkway near a car being loaded onto a flatbed tow truck when a two-door hatchback traveling east on Greenway crossed the median into oncoming traffic, striking two other vehicles, said Phoenix Sgt. Vince Lewis.

The officer shoved the tow-truck driver to safety and then dived out of the way himself. The officer was injured trying to get out of the way, but Lewis said he was not hit by one of the vehicles.

The officer received non-life-threatening injuries. The hatchback driver was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Police: Man killed over television in Chandler

Chandler police have identified 25-year-old Delano Marquis Ortiz as the suspect in the shooting death, over a television, of a man near downtown Chandler on Saturday night.

Chandler police Sgt. Daniel Mejia said police were called to the Elmwood Mobile Home Park near Chandler Boulevard and Arizona Avenue after reports of a gunshot. When they arrived, Mejia said, 24-year-old Christian Acosta was found dead outside. He had been shot one time, Mejia said.

During the investigation, detectives identified Ortiz as the suspect and arrested him later Saturday night. He is being charged with second-degree murder. Police provided no details on the shooting, other than saying it involved a dispute over a television.

Mejia said detectives had not yet recovered the shotgun used in the shooting, saying that Ortiz discarded the weapon in a dumpster at an apartment complex near Chandler Boulevard and McQueen Road. Police asked for the public’s help in recovering the weapon.

Anyone with information on the weapon’s whereabouts was asked to call the Chandler Police Department at 480-782-4130.
