Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport will get a big boost next spring when Condor Airlines begins non-stop service between Phoenix and Frankfurt, Germany. It will be the first non-stops offered from Phoenix to Germany in more than a decade.

Condor Airlines plans to begin nonstop service between Phoenix and Frankfurt, Germany, next spring, a big boost for Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

The airport sorely lacks overseas flights for a city the size of metro Phoenix, with just one carrier, British Airways, offering non-stop flights to Europe. The Phoenix City Council recently approved a new incentive program to lure flights, offering marketing funds and fee waivers.

Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton called the new route exciting news for Arizona.

“It’s meaningful for Phoenix to have a non-stop route to mainland Europe, which is a sign of the strength of our market and economy, and will help boost the tourism industry for both Arizona and our German friends,” Stanton said.

Phoenix will be the airline’s 12th U.S. destination.

Condor will operate the PhoenixFrankfurt flight on Mondays and Fridays beginning May 18 and running through September. The airline also launched seasonal flights to Frankfurt from San Diego this summer.

Condor, part of British travel giant Thomas Cook, plans to use a Boeing 767 on the route, with 259 seats and three classes of service: business, premium and economy.

The cheapest fares start at $780 round trip at current exchange rates.

German carrier Lufthansa offered flights between Phoenix and Frankfurt from 2001 to 2003.
