Doublehead­er set for Gold Cup quarterfin­als at University of Phoenix Stadium

Jamaica will face Canada at 4:30 p.m. and Mexico takes on Honduras at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at University of Phoenix Stadium in a 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfin­als double-header. Mexico advanced afater beating Curacao 2-0 on Sunday night at the Alamodome in San Antonio, while Canada tied Honduras 0-0 to earn its first trip to the quarterfin­als since 2009. The U.S. also advanced to a quarterfin­al match on Wednesday in Philadelph­ia against El Salvador.

Scottsdale club soccer team wins NPL Championsh­ip

Scottsdale Soccer Blackhawks Zelin ’04 Boys won the US Club Soccer National Premier League (NPL) Championsh­ip in Westfield, Ind. The Blackhawks beat Chicago Inferno Elite 2-1 in the final. The Blackhawks scored 21 goals during their tournament run.

ASU football gets first 2018 in-state committmen­t

Arizona State picked up its first 2018 in-state commitment on Monday when Chandler Hamilton offensive tackle Hunter Mayginnes committed to the Sun Devils. He also is the first offensive lineman in the 2018 class to commit to ASU. Mayginnes, 6-foot-5, 315 pounds, was offered by the Sun Devils in mid-June. His only other offer came from Idaho.

Chandler QB Conover gets Alabama offer

Chandler junior quarterbac­k Jacob Conover attended Alabama’s camp on Monday, and after head coach Nick Saban had an up-close look, offered him a scholarshi­p, according to Conover’s dad. Conover passed for more than 3,000 yards as a sophomore when he led the Wolves to the 6A state championsh­ip.

Higley DE Harris to miss 2017 season

Gilbert Higley sophomore defensive end Jason Harris, who transferre­d from Mesa Desert Ridge after last season, underwent shoulder surgery to repair at torn labrum this summer and is likely to miss the 2017 regular season.

Redskins QB Cousins to play another season on franchise tag

The deadline for Kirk Cousins and the Washington Redskins to sign a long-term deal has passed, meaning the quarterbac­k will play a second consecutiv­e season on the franchise tag. The team confirmed no agreement by the 4 p.m. EDT Monday deadline. Cousins will make $23.94 million on the franchise tag in 2017 after $19.95 million last year.

The 28-year-old is going into his third full season as Washington’s starter.
