Arians says Stanton will be backup QB

- SCOTT BORDOW

To no one’s surprise, Cardinals coach Bruce Arians put to rest the question of backup quarterback. On his weekly appearance on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM, Arians told hosts azcentral sports columnist Dan Bickley and Vince Marotta that “decision's made, Drew's our backup.”

Stanton has completed 13 of 21 passes for 129 yards and a touchdown in two preseason games, while Blaine Gabbert has gone 30-for-48 for 412 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

“Blaine’s been a great surprise,” Arians said.

“... It was a no-risk proposition. Is he ready to be our No. 2 in the season? I doubt it just because he doesn’t know the offense well, and he’s seeing a lot of vanilla stuff out there.”

Fitzgerald has warm words for Boldin

“I’ve never played with anybody tougher,” Fitzgerald said. “He’s the most gritty, hard-nosed guy I’ve ever been around at any position. He’s just special that way. … He was cut from a different cloth.”

Fitzgerald also spoke fondly of the trips he and Boldin would take around the world in the offseason.

“So many times off the field in Ethiopia or Senegal or all around the country doing things that are positive,” said Fitzgerald, who believes Boldin has Hall of Fame credentials. “Always inviting me to be a part of it. I’m just happy I was able to be around him for as long as I was able to and be able to call him a friend. I just hope he’s happy and will enjoy his retirement.”
